A/Prof Michael Lawless is one of Australia’s most experienced eye surgeons, having performed more than 30,000 surgical procedures. He is a clinical associate professor at Sydney Medical School (University of Sydney) and is recognised throughout the world as an authority on laser eye surgery. A/Prof Lawless’s expertise encompasses laser eye surgery (LASIK, ASLA/PRK and SMILE®), cataract and lens replacement surgery (including laser cataract surgery) and phakic intraocular lenses. In addition to his refractive work, A/Prof Lawless treats corneal conditions using procedures such as corneal cross-linking and corneal transplantation.


A/Prof Lawless graduated in medicine from the University of Sydney. Ophthalmology training in Sydney was followed by two years of sub-speciality education, a corneal and external diseases fellowship with Professor Doug Coster in Adelaide, and a second fellowship in corneal and refractive surgery with Professor Richard Troutman at the Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital in New York. A/Prof Lawless has published over 100 scientific papers in the peer-reviewed literature, written 30 textbook chapters on corneal laser and cataract topics, and continues to be an investigator in clinical trials.
