Prof Gerard Sutton


Prof Gerard Sutton is one of Australia’s leading ophthalmic surgeons and is internationally recognised as an expert in cataract surgery, laser cataract surgery, laser vision correction and corneal transplantation. He is a highly experienced eye surgeon, having performed over 20,000 surgical procedures, and is the Sydney Medical School Foundation Douglas & Lola Douglas Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology at the University of Sydney. Prof Sutton has pioneered and remains at the forefront of the key vision correction technologies including femtosecond- LASIK, ASLA/PRK, SMILE®, laser lens surgery, implantable contact lenses and can offer patients the latest proven intraocular lens options including trifocal and multifocal lenses. As an expert in corneal conditions, Prof Sutton also performs procedures such as corneal cross-linking and modern corneal transplantation (DMEK, DALK, DSAEK).

Professor Sutton’s eminence in his field has been recognized with numerous recent awards including the XOVA Excellence in Ophthalmology, the Lions International Ophthalmology Award for his work in Myanmar and the Inaugural Sydney Big Idea Award for the development of an innovative eye treatment, the iFixSystem. Prof Sutton’s surgical expertise and knowledge is often sought after internationally and he is frequently invited to lecture and teach at meetings such as the World Ophthalmology Conference and the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology.
