Dr David Ng is a general ophthalmologist who treats a broad range of conditions. He has considerable experience in performing laser cataract surgery and was part of the first team in the Southern Hemisphere to use laser technology for cataract surgery. He regularly lectures on this area to optometrists and other doctors. Dr Ng also has a particular interest in glaucoma and medical diseases of the retina, including diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration and retinal vein occlusion. Dr Ng regularly manages and treats eyelid lesions and pterygium. For pterygium surgery, he uses tissue glue to reduce the need for sutures.
Dr Ng often travels to developing countries to perform pro-bono cataract surgery and is also a designated aviation ophthalmologist (DAO). He is the Medical Director of China Vision, an Australian-based charity that conducts cataract surgery missions in China. As part of Dr Ng’s work for China Vision, he visited Qingxin city, Guangdong in 2018 to perform cataract surgery.
Dr Ng received a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from the University of Sydney, and later completed his Master of Public Health at the same university. He gained a wide breadth of clinical expertise in neurosurgery and plastic surgery prior to commencing his ophthalmology training at the renowned Sydney Eye Hospital. Dr Ng is a conjoint senior lecturer at the University of Western Sydney School of Medicine. Through his great interest in medical mission, he has worked in Tanzania as well as in the Northern Territory with the Aboriginal population. He has travelled to China many times to provide volunteer services. In 2014 and 2015, he travelled to Kratie, Cambodia to perform cataract surgery with Cambodia Vision.
